Programme Overview
The MSc Actuarial Science at LIAS provides a rigorous foundation in the mathematical, statistical and professional techniques at the core of actuarial practice. The programme is designed for graduates from quantitative backgrounds who wish to pursue a career as a qualified actuary.
The curriculum is aligned with the Core Principles and Core Practice subjects of the IFoA syllabus across nine taught modules and a thesis.

The programme is awarded by the EuroAmerican Institute, accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) at MQF Level 7, and delivered fully online by LIAS with structured timetabling designed to accommodate students across multiple time zones.
Structure and Modules
The MSc Actuarial Science is delivered across three terms over 18 months. Terms 1 and 2 build the quantitative, statistical, and financial foundations of actuarial science. Term 3 integrates this knowledge into professional practice and culminates in the Masters thesis.
Exit Awards
Students who do not complete the full credits for the masters degree, may be eligible for an exit award at MQF Level 7, subject to satisfying the relevant credit requirements.
Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert)
30 ECTS - Approximately 6 Months
Awarded on successful completion of the first 30 ECTS credits of the programme. Represents a recognised postgraduate qualification at MQF Level 7.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)
60 ECTS - Approximately 12 Months
Awarded on successful completion of 60 ECTS credits. Represents a substantive postgraduate qualification at MQF Level 7, covering the majority of the taught curriculum.
Programme Delivery
The programme is delivered entirely online, combining live teaching with structured self-study to support working professionals and international students across different time zones.
Live Sessions
Synchronous lectures and tutorials delivered via video conference, with full recordings available on the learning management system for flexible review. Sessions are scheduled to accommodate students across multiple time zones.
Self-Directed Study
Each module includes structured reading lists, guided content and formative exercises delivered through the LMS. Students work through material at their own pace, supported by clear learning objectives and milestones.
Applied Workshops
Practical modelling sessions using Excel, R and other industry-standard tools. Students work through realistic actuarial problems, building the technical proficiency expected in professional practice.
Academic Support
One-to-one guidance, personalised exam planning and mentoring from the teaching team. Students also receive dedicated thesis supervision during Term 3.

Academic Qualifications
A first or upper second-class honours degree (MQF Level 6) in mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, economics or related quantitative discipline.
Other fields may be considered with sufficient mathematical preparation.

Scholarships and Financial Aid
Scholarships for the January 2027 intake
LIAS will offer a small number of scholarships in partnership with the IFoA Foundation for the January 2027 intake. These scholarships are designed to support talented candidates for whom the cost of study may otherwise be a barrier.

Pay the application fee
A non-refundable application fee of £150 is required to complete your submission.
Await a decision
Shortlisted applicants may be invited to a short online interview. Successful applicants receive an offer letter with acceptance and payment instructions.
